Commitment Towards Disaster Preparedness: SPCSN Concluded Successful DRRM Training linking with Social Protection

Kathmandu, July 26, 2024
In a strong demonstration of commitment towards disaster preparedness, Social Protection Civil Society Network (SPCSN), in collaboration with Save the Children, successfully concluded a two-day training workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM). Held from July 22-23, 2024, the event brought together 20 participants—9 women and 11 men—representing various member organizations of SPCSN.

The training sessions were chaired by Mr. Tilottam Paudel, Chairperson of SPCSN, and hosted by Mr. Rajendra Chaulagain, Program Coordinator of SPCSN. The event kicked off with a warm welcome remark from Ms. Dolma Tamang, Vice Chairperson of SPCSN, setting an enthusiastic tone for the workshop. Speaking at the opening session, Mr. Gopal Nepali, Sr. Project Coordinator of Save the Children, highlighted the partnership objectives between Save the Children and SPCSN. He also reminded the participants of the organizational development plan developed two years ago. Mr. Nepali emphasized that the DRRM training aims to enhance the knowledge of the board and staff of SPCSN on how social protection is linked with DRR.

Mr. Rabin Dahal from Save the Children led the insightful sessions, covering essential topics such as conceptual clarity on DRRM, the relationship between DRR and Social Protection, vulnerability and DRR, existing policies and legal provisions for DRR, and strategies for networks and CSOs to advocate and prepare plans for disaster risk minimization. These topics were complemented by practical tools and case studies, facilitating a deeper understanding of integrating DRRM into social protection strategies. The participants engaged actively in discussions, interactions, and presentations, showcasing a commendable level of enthusiasm and commitment.

A significant outcome of the training was the commitment of participants and CSOs to developing comprehensive DRRM guidelines tailored to the specific needs of SPCSN. This initiative underscores the organization’s proactive approach to enhancing disaster resilience within its network. This event marks a pivotal step towards strengthening disaster risk reduction and management strategies within the SPCSN network, ensuring better preparedness and resilience for the future.
